MARGAO: Traditional fishermen from Benaulim are up in arms against the construction of a floating jetty proposed by the Drishti Cruise and Ferries.
However, a Drishti official said that the proposed jetty is a public interest project and that they will take all stakeholders into confidence.

Speaking to Herald, traditional fishermen Francis alias Pele Fernandes said that a team of Drishti Lifesavings along with GCZMA officials visited Benaulim beach a few days back and conducted a survey for the construction of a floating jetty. When inquired, he was told that a floating jetty has been proposed by the Drishti Lifesavings.
Pele said that the floating jetty will ruin the livelihood of the fishermen. He said that Benaulim beach is only one-km-long and the fishermen will not get adequate place to use their nets. Each fishing net (rampon) in spread over 600 metres and if the jetty is built then fishermen will be unable to user the rampon. Besides this, the jetty will also affect the business of taxis and water sports operators.
