MARGAO: The gram sabha of Benaulim was adjourned following uproar over the recording of the minutes of the previous meeting.
When the meeting chaired by Sarpanch Remy Fernandes was called to order, gram sabha members raised objections to the minutes circulated by the panchayat of the previous meeting. They also questioned the chair for circulating two different sets of minutes, raising doubts about the veracity of the same.
Considerable time was consumed in this discussion with agitated gram sabha members taking the secretary and the sarpanch to task. Matters came to a head when the secretary explained that error occurred with the clerk, with members asserting that the secretary cannot pass the blame on to the clerk for the glaring discrepancies.
After much discussion, the sarpanch told the members that the panchayat is open for correction of the minutes, but that did not cut much ice with some members, while others were willing to accept the suggestion mooted by the sarpanch.
Since some of the members continued to raise objections to the minutes, the sarpanch decided to adjourn the meeting to next month. Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva and newly elected Benaulim Zilla Panchayat member Maria Rebello were present.
