Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas Opposes Sagarmala Project in Betul, Cites Environmental and Cultural Concerns

Benaulim AAP MLA Captain Venzy Viegas has voiced strong opposition to the proposed Sagarmala project in Betul, asserting that the development is intended to facilitate coal handling at the port—something he warns will severely damage the environment and jeopardise public health.

Describing the project site as a “spiritual location,” Viegas said the area holds deep cultural and religious significance for locals. He noted that Goans traditionally refrain from consuming alcohol and certain foods at the site, underscoring its sanctity. The MLA added that he believes “divine intervention” will prevent the controversial project from moving forward, given the harm it could bring even to its supporters.
