Ornaments worth Rs 46 lakh stolen

MARGAO: Burglars struck gold at Cuncolim in a major daylight burglary on Friday morning, sending shockwaves in the locality.
Uunknown culprits barged inside the house of Datta Desai at Cuncolim on Friday morning and decamped with gold ornaments worth around Rs 46 lakh.
The incident occurred when Datta had gone out to the market in the moirning, only to find the house burgled after his return. The culprits ransacked the house in search of the booty and looted the gold ornaments stored in the cupboards.
Datta told Herald that he had gone out to drop his son at the bus stand before heading to the market for shopping. “I did some shopping because of the Umbrella festival in Cuncolim today and later visited the bank for some personal work”, he said.
When he returned home, he was shocked to find the house door open and his worst fears came true when he found the cupboards ransacked by the miscreants and the gold stolen.
“The stolen booty includes the gold ornaments of my sister, who is a widow. She stays in Mapusa, but had kept her gold ornaments at our place for safety. The value of her gold ornaments is estimated Rs 20 lakh”, he said.
As news of the shocking incident spread across the town, Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik paid a visit to the house and called for thorough investigation into the burglary. “This is the first time that a major burglary has taken place in Cuncolim. My government is aware of the shortage of police manpower. The situation will improve with the government going in for recruitment of policemen and officers in a big way”, he added.
