VASCO: Mormugao Taluka which voted entirely for the BJP is now puzzled about its fate, since the party would be sitting in opposition if the Congress forms government.
However and hypothetically, if the saffron party forms the next government, then, the situation would be more confusing all the four legislators would fight for a ministerial berth.
As the results threw up a hung assembly, all sorts of theories and political calculation started making rounds in Mormugao taluka which is now represented entirely by the saffron brigade.
The situation is confusing because, two of the four BJP MLAs, Milind Naik and Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha, were ministers in the former BJP government. Thus, if BJP forms the government, then, whether it would give cabinet berth to both these MLAs or at least one among them is a big question.
Similarly, after winning election for second term, expectations of Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida would also be high, likewise as an experienced leader Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho would also be a front runner for a ministerial berth.
However, if Congress forms the government then the same would not only spoil the chances of leaders becoming minister but they, then, have to sit in opposition.
Meanwhile, the poll results were nothing less than shocker for some prominent leaders in fray as despite putting in their hard efforts, they had to face defeat. While supporters of all elected BJP MLA’s started their celebration, the supporters of few prominent candidates from Mormugao taluka who faced defeat, suddenly turned mute after receiving the biggest shock on Saturday.
The supporters of Congress candidate from Mormugao Sankalp Amonkar were all prepared for victory rally, but were left upset with the fact that Amonkar lost the elections by a narrow margin of just 140 votes.
Similarly, it was nothing less than a shocker for Independent candidate Krishna Salkar, Congress candidate Saifulla Khan and NCP candidate Jose Philip D’ Souza as they all were very hopeful of their victory. This defeat would now affect their political carrier.
In Dabolim, MGP candidate Premanand Nanoskar was pretty confident of his victory but had never dreamt that he would lose the election by 2494 votes to Godinho.
Likewise, in Cortalim Congress candidate Gilbert Mariano Rodrigues had never dreamt that he would be pushed to the third position in tally. Supporters of Independent candidate Antonio Vas were upset as Vas lost the elections with narrow margin of only 518 votes.
