VASCO: Noted architect K D Sadhle inaugurated “Chrysalis” — the butterfly garden at the MES College campus, Zuarinagar, on Sunday.
The garden has been opened as part of the Kasturi Series by the Nature Club of MES College and Foundation for Environment Research and Conservation (FERC).
College sources informed that the “Chrysalis” is a unique garden aimed at encouraging butterfly breeding and creating habitats for the butterflies by planting appropriate plants.
FERC founder member Parag Rangnekar mentioned that the habitat was not for the butterflies alone but for many species and added that by creating a garden like “Chrysalis” would enable students to take ownership of the plants to ensure that they are nurtured well.
He said, “Everyone should be able to create a butterfly garden in their backyard with little guidance and initiative.”
Chief guest Sadhle, founder architect of MES College of Arts and Commerce recalling the early days informed that the college was a rocky area without a single tree.
He stressed on decentralised and local systems to protect the environment. Founder Principal and Chairman of Murgaon Education Society, M S Kamat also spoke.
The butterfly garden is a FERC initiative, sponsored by the Directorate of Higher Education with the plants contributed by the Lions Club of Cortalim.
Members of lions club, management, teaching and non-teaching staff and Higher Secondary School and college students were present.
