CURCHOREM: People from Curchorem particularly from Cacora area have accepted setting up of a Solid Waste Management Facility (SWMF) at Cacora during the public hearing on environmental clearance for same on Tuesday.
At the hearing, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral assured the people that only garbage from Canacona, Curchorem, Dharbandora and Sanguem would brought to the plant and that too only one or two trucks would be allowed to this plant with garbage collected from other places except Curchorem.
“The panchayats or municipalities from other places except Curchorem have to set up garbage collection centres in their own premises and then transport the same by trucks sent by the Solid Waste Management Authority or the company that sets up the plant. Individual trucks of the respective panchayats and the municipality from Curchorem constituency will be allowed directly to this plant and others have to send it by the trucks of SWMA or company,” Cabral said.
Thanking the people for reposing faith in him, Cabral informed that he had given opportunity to the people to show him the better plant than this which can treat 50 tonnes per day but nobody came to him. “A similar plant which is operated at Saligao is one of the best technologies for treating waste in India,” Cabral said and asked the people to raise their hands if they support the plant at Cacora, to which most people nodded positively.
South Goa Additional Collector Johnson Fernandes who was a moderator during hearing said that people did not raise any issue concerning the environment but asked some technical questions like cost factor, cost benefit ratio and the operation system.
“Detail functioning of the SWMF was explained to the people through presentations and clarified the doubts raised the by the people and I am sure that people are fully convinced about it,” Fernandes said.
SWMF Managing Director Sanjit Rodrigues informed that the work on the project would begin once they get Environment Clearance Certificate after submitting the minutes of this hearing prepared by the Pollution Control Board.
