Calangute condemns police brutality

CALANGUTE: Speakers at the meeting convened by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo and supported by ‘Save Calangute’ condemned the police brutality on the 19-year-old youth of Calangute and government’s failure to shut down nightclubs in Calangute.

The meeting drew a good response from the villagers of Calangute and others who gathered in large numbers to support the cause.
The speakers condemned the Calangute police brutality and demanded the dismissal of those police personnel involved in the case.
Speaking at the meeting, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the Goa police are quick in registering FIRs against innocent and law-abiding Goans, but when it comes to tackling crimes it is inefficient.
“The Goa Police had registered FIRs against Porvorim locals for saving the day for Goa Police by handling the Nigerians and same thing has now happened in Calangute with police registering FIRs against Calangute MLA Lobo. I sincerely appreciate Lobo’s efforts for openly coming out in support of the people of Calangute,” Khaunte stated.
Claiming that the tourism minister was only interested in demolishing the shacks of locals and cutting the deck beds in front of the tourists, Khaunte said such activity would ultimately ruin tourism and foreign tourists would shy away from Goa.
