CANACONA: Keeping up their pressure for a footbridge over the Galgibaga river, the core committee members of Galgibaga-Maxem Jagruth Narik Samittee met at Galgibaga on Saturday and appointed a six-member committee to pursue the matter with the government. Agnelo Barretto has been appointed president of the six-member committee. “The bridge has become a necessity as our people are unnecessarily losing their lives in the absence of a footbridge,” said Barretto, while referring to the recent death of Agnes Afonso, who was fatally hit by a moving train while crossing the railway tracks near the KRC bridge at Galgibaga.
During a previous discussion on the location of the footbridge, the core committee members of panel also came down heavily on the indifferent attitude of the RND staff deputed at the ferry services.
“The ferry staff is not cooperating with the public. We do not mind their indifferent attitude at other times, but we want them to ply additional trips during peak hours (school time, church services, etc) on either side. It is during these times that the ferry services are most required,” Barretto added.
The appointed committee has decided to approach PWD Minister Sudhin Dhavalikar and apprise him of the urgency in constructing a footbridge over Galgibaga river.
Besides Barretto, others present at the meeting included Galgibaga Parish Priest Fr Simon Rebello, Galgibaga Panch Caetano Barretto, Kishore Paigankar, Luiza, Caitano Viegas, Pedro Barretto and Diogo D’Silva.
