CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Friday alleged that Calangute Panchayat is more concerned about welfare of hoteliers rather than the villagers of Calangute.
The problem of discharge of sewage was brought to the notice of the Calangute MLA by the locals while he was canvassing for BJP’s North Goa candidate Shripad Naik in Naikka Vaddo, Calangute.
Lobo was referring to open discharge of sewage in the gutters in a ward by the hoteliers, posing a threat to life and property. Calangute Sarpanch Geeta Porob however claimed that they have written to the health authorities to initiate action against the erring hoteliers of the area.
Speaking to Herald while campaigning in Naikka Vaddo represented by Porob, Lobo said, “Calangute panchayat is more concerned about the welfare of hoteliers and that is the precise reason you see so much of sewage discharge in the gutters meant for rain water. This is simple dangerous for health.”
When contacted, Sarpanch Porob in the presence of her husband, Laxman, said, “We have written to the health authorities highlighting the problem faced by locals, but the health authorities are yet to act in the matter.”
Laxman said BJP Calangute Youth President Yeshwant Kandolkar who heads the Sanitation Committee should be held responsible for the delay.
However, Kandolkar said, “Laxman Porob himself is the member of Sanitation Committee and should have taken the initiative. I have already directed the health officer to conduct site inspection and issue notices to the erring hoteliers.”
