CALANGUTE: Mindful about the prolonged delay in completing the landmark Calangute Beach promenade and related beautification works, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has assured that the project will be completed by December 15.
“The contractor entrusted with the Calangute Beach promenade project has assured to complete all the pending works and hand over possession to the government by December 15,” informed Lobo.
“The works were held up due to non-payment, but the issue has been resolved with the intervention of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Though a lot of work is pending, there should be no problem in completing the project much before the deadline of December 15,” added Lobo.
Herald had first highlighted the lengthy delay in completing the Calangute Beach promenade, despite assurances to complete the project well before the tourist season this year.
The beach promenade project includes the beautification work from Bandodkar statue to the steps leading to the beach, a walkway to include interlocking pavers and benches on both sides, new oval-shaped stairway and ramp for the physically-challenged, new high-mast lamp and side wall along the promenade with Portuguese-style banisters.
The foundation stone for the Rs 1.1 crore project was laid by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on June 18, 2012 and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo launched the beautification work of the Calangute promenade on November 6, 2012.
Residents and stakeholders in the tourism sector, especially the shack owners hope the project is completed at the earliest.
