PANJIM: BJP legislator from St Andre constituency Vishnu Wagh Thursday appealed to the State government to work out solutions to make up for the losses incurred due to the mining ban since September 2012.
Speaking during a discussion in the assembly, Wagh said that the State should work out a long term financial solutions and create alternative modes for generating revenue.
“How long are we supposed to cry over the mining ban and losses? We need to work out solutions for a better future. Mining is not going to continue for posterity even if it has started now,” the legislator said.
Expressing urgent need for a road map, he suggested upgrading hinterland and village tourism rather than focusing on beach tourism, which will also add revenue to the State coffers. Besides, Wagh suggested that entertainment industry based economy is one option that Goa can explore, while also expressing displeasure over the recent decision of the Corporation of City of Panjim to ban film shooting in the city.
“Entertainment is becoming important. There are several film shootings happening in the State. We are forgetting that people employed for the shooting are paid much more than those in the mining industry,” the ruling BJP legislator said calling for more places for film shootings and facilities.
Stressing that discussion on mining issue was crucial, he said that the government should call for a special two day legislative assembly session to discuss the issue and evolve solutions.
While commenting on the deteriorating law and order in the State, Wagh questioned about the weak moral and social fabric resulting in the crimes. He said it was the responsibility of the government to restore the law and order situation back to normal.
He also cited the example of a medical student from Goa Medical College, who was caught in an attempt to rob a bank.
