Campaigning for polls to end today

As per information available, a total of 30 polling booths have been identified as sensitive, hypersensitive and critical.

PANJIM: The fortnight-long campaign for the August 10 panchayat elections will end on Monday evening – 48 hours prior to 186 panchayats going for the poll. 

Nearly 8.27 lakh Goans will cast their vote to elect representatives in 1464 wards. Candidates in 64 wards are already elected unopposed. A total of 5038 candidates are in the fray. The counting of votes will take place on August 12.

The voting will be held through ballot papers. Though the elections are not fought on party lines, several MLAs, both from the ruling and opposition, have fielded their panels in their respective constituencies. 

The Bardez Taluka, with 33 village panchayats, will witness a contest with a maximum number of 995 candidates, followed by 863 in Salcete, which also has 33 panchayats.

There are 601 contesting candidates in Ponda, 583 candidates in Tiswadi, 450 in Pernem, 380 in Bicholim, 259 in Sattari and 240 in Quepem.

There are 219 candidates in Mormugao, 169 in Canacona, 156 in Sanguem and 123 in Dharbandora.

The voting will take place across 1566 polling booths, which are placed in 1049 locations. North Goa, comprising 97 panchayats has a maximum of 783 wards, whereas in South there are 745 wards in 89 panchayats.
