CANACONA: In an unusual series of events, Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Ajay Bhagat has recalled his resignation, prompting six councillors in the 10-member council to table a no-confidence motion against the beleaguered chairperson.

However, Bhagat claimed that he enjoys the support of six councillors including his own. “It will be decided when the no-confidence motion is taken up for voting,” he said.

Bhagat, who had resigned from his post last Thursday, in a dramatic and secret manner, recalled his resignation by personally visiting the DMA on Tuesday afternoon, reportedly after learning that he is safe in his stable with councillors scurrying at 5-5.

A group which was holed up at a religious place in Karnataka got wind of the recall of the resignation letter and instantly drove back to the taluka and on Wednesday morning and tabled a no-confidence motion against Bhagat with the DMA.

The no trust motion letter is reportedly signed by Deputy Chairperson Rajeshri Diwakar Pagui, Madhav Dessai, Champa Pagui, Ramakant Naik Gaunkar, Suchita Naik Gaunkar and Ratnakar Dhuri.

When contacted, Bhagat claimed that he enjoys the support of five councillors. “It’s only a signed letter that is submitted as having no confidence in me,” he said.

“I know I enjoy confidence of majority of the councillors and we will see how many signatories are supporting the letter when the motion is taken up for voting,” said Bhagat.
