CANACONA: Extended rain spells may have played spoilsport, but it has not deterred preparations for the forthcoming tourism season.
Hectic activities like assembling of huts, shacks, tents and stalls are underway along the entire coastline from Khola to Polem in Canacona taluka, with prime coasts, Palolem beach and Agonda, leading the way.
“This is a happy hunting ground for the labour force, as they are high in demand for their services in the coastal areas,” informed a Palolem resident.
Male labourers have been quoting rates of about Rs 500-600 per day, while women labourers refuse to settle below a daily wage of Rs 250-300 for any odd jobs along different shores. Besides, routine unskilled jobs, skilled works of plumbers and electricians are also in great demand.
Transporters like rickshaws and pickups are also in great demand to transport various items needed for the re-assembling of various huts, shacks and stalls.
Looking ahead to a busy tourism season, taxi operators are also gearing up by completing maintenance works of their vehicles, while a few tourist taxi associations have been activated to safeguard their businesses.
