Canoe capsizes off Colva beach, 13 fishermen from Andhra Pradesh rescued

Eight lifesavers enter into choppy waters, rescue all the struggling fishermen

MARGAO: Thirteen fishermen had a miraculous escape as the canoe capsized off Colva beach on Monday morning.

According to the police, the incident was reported at around 10.15 am when a group of fishermen, all hailing from Andhra Pradesh had ventured into the rough sea, in a motorised canoe.

But the canoe capsized 70 metres away from the Colva coastline, resulting in the fishermen being tossed into the rough sea.  

The tourist police staff and lifeguards posted on the beach noticed the fishing canoe with crew crying for help and on spotting their distress, as many as eight lifesavers ventured entered into the sea and rescued all the struggling fishermen. 

During the rescue operation, one of the lifeguards suffered a nasal bone injury and was referred to the hospital for treatment. 

All the 13 rescued fishermen were brought safely to the shore and their health parameters were checked. They were later shifted to the South Goa District Hospital, Margao for treatment. No casualties were reported following the mishap.

45-yr-old worker dies of suspected cardiac arrest on trawler while at sea

VASCO: A 45-year-old Andhra native worker died mid-sea on a trawler off Velsao. The cause of death is suspected to be cardiac arrest. The deceased is identified as Komara Yarana. He complained of severe heart pain while pulling the net and collapsed in the boat. He was taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Cansaulim, where he was declared brought dead.

The Coastal police are conducting investigation. The body was sent to the hospital for autopsy so as to know the exact cause of death.
