PANJIM: With barely three days left for the Carnival, the Carnival Committees in the towns of Goa are yet to receive funds with the file proposing financial approval pending with the State government.
Chairperson of the Carnival Organizing Committee Deepak Desai said that the Panjim committee has not received Rs 20 lakh funds allotted by the Tourism Department. On the other hand, Tourism Director Sanjeev Gauns Dessai stated that the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has placed the file before the Finance Department for approval.
“Panjim, Margao and Vasco Carnival Committees are allotted Rs 20 lakh each for the Carnival extravaganza. The GTDC has submitted the file for approval. The committees will get 50 percent advance before the festival on February 25,” he assured speaking to Herald. The remaining funds will be released to the committees after the event.
Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Y B Tavde said they have received the sanction letter and an account has been opened as per the mandate, but the funds have not been received.
The festival, scheduled from February 25 to 28 will emphasise on eco-friendly floats, getting rid of junk vehicles, cracking down on indecency, and maintaining the traditional and cultural essence of the festivity. The organizing committee has chosen Tome Fernandes as King Momo.
