PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has issued a show cause notice to Captain of Ports (CoP) for undertaking construction of its terminal building without obtaining prior permission from the civic body.
In the notice issued on December 6, CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues asked CoP to show cause, within seven days as to “why an order under section 269 of the CCP Act should not be passed for demolition or removal of the terminal building”.
Rodrigues said that it appears that the construction of the building is being carried out without obtaining prior permission or approval, as required under Section 257 and in violation of provisions obtained under Section 256 (1) of the CCP Act 2002.
The show cause notice has been issued following a complaint by scientist Dr Jose D’Souza on August 16, followed by the Corporation’s resolution on October 30.
The Commissioner said the complaint brought to the notice of the CCP that CoP has commenced the primary construction work for the terminal building and has also erected or installed temporary structures for various other construction activities.
He added that the Corporation in its ordinary meeting held on October 30, discussed the matter at length and it was then decided to issue a notice to show cause as to why the building’s, which is on riverline land, services like power, water, fire, sewage and garbage need to be monitored through the Corporation, as it is done for all other buildings.
The foundation for the terminal building, constructed by Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation was laid in January, this year. The ship-shaped terminal building has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 28 crore.
