PANJIM: In a move to give the St Inez creek a new lease of life, the Corporation of City of Panjim (CCP) council along with Panjim MLA Siddharth Kunkalienkar has in-principle given their nod to a presentation by Resources International Company on cleaning and beautification of the creek.
The organization which held a presentation before the council on Friday, however, stated that partial coverage of the project would be done at a later stage. The project is likely to be implemented in two phases.
The company proposed that Canadian machinery Amphidex would be used to carry out de-silting and the total costis estimated at Rs 12 crore. The study is yet to cover the narrow portions of the creek.
The government needs to enter into an agreement with Resources International to take up the cleaning of the creek.
Kunkalienkar, St Cruz MLA Atanasio Monserrate, Panjim mayor Surendra Furtado and CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues were present.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, had earlier given his nod to the project stating that it was important to clear the grass and dirt from the creek before the onset of the monsoon to prevent flooding. The government has also assured to provide financial support to the CCP for the project.
Beautification of St Inez creek was one of the top priorities of Monserrate’s panel that holds power in the corporation.
Goa State Pollution Control Board is currently undertaking an aeration process to treat the polluted creek water. Around ten rigs have been installed at different locations to meet the GSPC water-quality criteria for dissolved oxygen in the creek.
