PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has proposed to construct a new building at the existing premises.
Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday and, apart from the proposed new CCP building, the two discussed the garbage issue which is plaguing the capital city in the absence of a garbage treatment or management facility.
After the meeting, Furtado said, “I have requested the CM to give us a date to visit CCP and meet all the Corporators. We are in the process of putting up a new building for CCP and I want the CM to see the presentation.”
He said that the new CCP building would require about three years to complete and will provide around 20,000 sq metres area and house all government offices scattered around the city. The new proposals include a multilevel parking space where around 300 cars and 50 trucks can be parked.
Speaking of solutions to the garbage problem he said, “We have discussed certain ways and means of lifting garden waste. We expect to address this issue within the next fortnight. I have also asked for a bigger mulching machine.”
Furtado said that he has requested for a mulching machine to be permanently stationed at the dumping site at Curca, where dumping has been stopped after the High Court orders. “We can mulch all the garden waste if the machine is stationed there and we will not have any garbage dumped at the site,” he added.
Furtado further sought Rs 5 crore from the government to refurbish the Panjim municipal market. “With this money, we want to revamp the entire complex which includes painting and installation of nearly 250 CCTVs. The overall estimates are also ready,” he stated.
