Passes Rs 13 crore deficit budget

PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Thursday proposed to raise the base of House tax to Rs 500 from whatever rate it was at present as it passed a Rs 13 crore deficit budget.
The Corporation is also planning on getting around Rs one crore as advertisement and signboards revenue and Rs 9 crore as revenue from House Tax from some 20,000-odd houses within its jurisdiction.
However, even though Thursday’s meeting was a budget session, the market issue came up and Corporator Rudresh Chodankar asked for an assurance from Mayor Surendra Furtado that the issue would be resolved.
The mayor answered in the affirmative, promising to settle the issue.
Furtado told media that this time due to the delay in holding of mayoral elections, the commissioner had to make use of a clause under the Act to allow this budget to be passed.
Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues told the corporators that they were to start a survey of the EDC Complex and Patto area to check offices so as to get an idea of the trade tax. He said that they would be measuring the office area as well as getting all details of trade being conducted.
Corporator Kabir Makhija Pinto also brought up the topic of the CCP being a nodal agency for collecting stray cattle, to which the commissioner said that the government had indeed notified that an advance of Rs 4,50,000 was supposed to be paid to the corporation and subsequently a like amount every month.
However, the mayor appeared to be unaware of this and did not seem in favour of the proposal, telling the corporators that he was not aware of the proposal.
