CARMONA: The online surveillance of the 20 sophisticated Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed in the coastal Carmona village apparently appear to have effectively tackled the vexed problem of clandestine garbage dumping within this panchayat jurisdiction.
Till date, these 20 CCTV cameras installed at a total cost of Rs 3.08 lakh under the XIV Finance Funds are monitoring the village roads at crucial locations.
“The main MDR road passing through Carmona was often seen as a target of garbage dumping by migrants, tourists, etc. and hence, was a cause of friction between the neighbouring villages and the Carmona Village Panchayat. There was a persistent demand from the gram sabha members to install CCTV cameras to tackle this menace. This CCTV surveillance system allows us to monitor our roads 24X7 by means of mobile apps while the DVR continuously records the footage. We have commenced a system of checking this footage on a daily basis to check any untoward incident in the village,” disclosed the Carmona Sarpanch Allwyn Jorge.
“Apart from the usage for garbage violations, the cameras serve as a security measure for our villagers who can be assured of safety and security day and night. So far, after installation of these systems, we did not have a single incident of littering on our major roads as these cameras serve as a deterrent for the habitual violators. The village panchayat members have resolved to install more such cameras at various other locations,” Allwyn added.
Meanwhile, Carmona Villagers Social Welfare Forum (CVSWF) President and Carmona Village Development Committee (VDC) Convenor Socorro Miranda said, “On the main road, there is some improvement but in the interiors, they have to install more CCTV cameras. Regarding the security aspect spoken by the sarpanch, there’s an urgent need to install CCTV cameras near the church, chapels and crosses, besides several black spots where garbage dumping and littering continues to take place”.
