MARGAO: Chandor villagers presented a special Diwali gift to the police personnel stationed at the outpost in the village by painting the premises and providing them with some basic amenities.
The rare gesture by Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott (GBE) has been hailed by the police personnel including the senior officers.
GBE painted the entire façade of the outpost with the yellow and white paint of the erstwhile Portuguese regime and also offered five blankets and pillows along with a water filter to the staff. The organisation informed that the two ceiling fans which are not functional would be replaced shortly.
Appreciating the gesture, Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas said, “This is a real morale booster as the people have done something for the police. Otherwise police are generally criticized and not appreciated.”
Urging the police personnel to respect the good gesture of the villagers, Deputy Superintendent of Police Raju Raut Desai said, “It is for the first time in my 28 years career in the police department that I am witnessing an incident where the people are doing something for the police personnel.”
Desai who hails from the neighbouring Assolda village said that he would see the outpost from the train every day while going to college which inspired him to join the police force. He further urged the personnel to take regular rounds of their area particularly in the night so that nefarious activities are curbed.
Speaking about the initiative, GBE General Secretary Alzira Pereira thanked the organisation members for sponsoring the entire exercise as a Diwali gift for the police staff. She said, “Police personnel are also human beings and just as we want good working conditions, we felt it necessary to improve the conditions in which they work and hence did what little we could.”
