PANJIM: Residents of Chimbel, under the banner of Chimbel Manch, called for the protection of a traditional well in the village, in accordance with a court order.

Speaking to the media, the villagers explained that in 2010, a builder had blocked access to the well by constructing a compound wall and covering the well with a metal sheet. However, after a 14-year legal battle, the villagers secured a victory in court, which ordered the protection of the well.
The Fast Track District Court in Panjim has directed that the religious significance of the public well located at Gaulembhat, Chimbel, be safeguarded. The court also ordered that no construction be allowed within a five-metre radius of the well.
According to the villagers, every April, the Devi Chimbelkarin palkhi procession arrives in Chimbel from Marcel-Ponda, and various important religious functions take place at the public well before the palkhi proceeds to other significant locations in the village.
The villagers have now decided to maintain the traditional well and use its water for daily needs.
