Chinchinim Sarpanch, deputy to be elected today

MARGAO: Chinchinim will elect a new Sarpanch and deputy Sarpanch on Monday.
The seats had fallen vacant following the ouster of then Sarpanch Royen Viegas and his deputy Melcy Barretto in a no-confidence motion.
The duo was voted out of office in the no-trust motion tabled by six members of the panchayat body, Constancio John Fernandes, Joslyn Constancio Fernandes, Antonetta Bela Domingo Manuel Rebello, Santos Patric Rebello, Santano Pedro Joaquim Leitao and Lydia Simon Fernandes.
It is learnt that the group which voted the sarpanch and deputy sarpanch were scheduled to meet later tonight to take a final call on the two posts.
Much significance has been attached to the election of the post of sarpanch and deputy sarpanch since the villagers expected the new body to take a final decision on the controversial market complex issue.
The market complex has created a division in the panchayat body and the village alike with two groups opposing setting up of the market in the acquired land near the cemetery, while the rival group is supporting the market in the proposed complex.
