Since the Portuguese era till today in modern road development infrastructure a sharp turn to the narrow main road at Carona is left in neglect. Although it poses danger to the motoring public, long back the authorities had installed a traffic viewing mirror for the motorist to view the traffic movement.
In today’s growing traffic movement and motorists driving in rash and negligent manner, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while talking on the mobile and driving in their busy schedule they have no time to view on the mirror and traffic signal. Hence the mirror is just gathering dust. Beside, since the opening of the Carona Bridge to the public, the traffic movement has increased tremendously on this route. When the motorist reaches the sharp turn site they cannot view the oncoming and going traffic ahead on both sides unless, if a good sensible scooterist and motorist drive with caution and can pass freely to their destination. Those driving recklessly ignoring traffic ahead have, on many occasions, caused fatalities and narrowly missed making collisions. Time will come one day heavy collision is likely to occur on this dangerous zone.
Nobody is bothered about public safety. Only when some incident (accident) happens and some precious lives are lost, the government sheds crocodile tears and the game of passing the buck starts with the authorities. Successive MLAs, Sarpanches and Panchas have come and gone taking benefits of the vote bank.
We often read on the newspapers that our flamboyant Aldona MLA Glenn Souza Ticlo had said he had done all round development in his constituency. Well, when come to public safety the answer here remains a question mark. To save the people dying on the road accidents, the concerned authority should visit the site and work out some positive strategy to install speed breaker or should develop the sharp turn to have accident free zone fulfilling public safety.
