Margao’s perennial woes

It is a year now since this new municipal body consisting of Fatorda Forward and Margao first took their oath of office at the historic Lohia Maidan with great pomp and hype but the situation on the ground remains the same as before.

People  had high  expectations  when new  faces were  elected  at  the  council elections  but  the usual  game  of  passing  the buck  has  started  with the  Councillors  blaming  the  technical dept  and  vice  versa and  this  blame  game  will  go  on for  the  remaining four  years. The public  were promised  good  roads, that  parking problems  would be solved and  garbage  issues would  be  addressed  but  nothing  seems  to  be happening. Relocation  of  the  city  petrol  pumps lies  in  cold  storage,  multi-level parking remains only  on  paper  with  motorists  having  to  take  circles around  the  city to  find  a  parking  slot without  being hounded  by  the  camera  happy  traffic  police.
Margao’s topography  has  remained  the  same  for  the last  50  years  or  so  except  for  some  concrete  jungles coming up.  The  condition  of  the  new  market  remains  the  same, except for  the  passages  getting  narrower. The road  around  the  municipal  garden  after the  JICA  works  is  crying  for  attention.
