On October 27, the Mormugao Municipal Council is reported to have issued notice to piggery owners not to let their pigs out of their property onto the public places. The MMC is to be appreciated for having woken up to the hazards of stray animals in public places.
However, what is baffling Vasco locals is why pigs have been singled out when the menace of stray cattle and dogs poses a grave danger.
Often, as one enters Vaddem, Vasco, one is greeted by the sight of overflowing and overturned garbage bins by stray cattle and stray dogs. In our country cattle are loved very much, but there is not much concern when they stray, feast on garbage and later die after eating plastic from the littered non-segregated waste.
These stray animals defecate the roads and public places leaving the areas stinking. These areas are never cleaned up by the concerned authorities. The hypocritical attitude of public and the authorities is disappointing. If only the authorities would fulfil their civic responsibilities and commitments, and impound the strays in animal shelters, it would be one small step forward towards a Swachh Goa.
