MARGAO: Motorists try to find shortcuts to avoid waiting for the green light at a junction. In the case of the Old Market Circle in Margao, some motorists are bypassing the red light by driving on the slip-road along the Old-Market Colva road, taking a U turn and crossing over to the opposite lane just before Tanishq showroom and using the slip road once again to drive onto the Old Market KTC road.
By doing so, the motorists are risking their own lives and the lives of other motorists who are travelling along the Old Market Circle-Colva road.
Herald observed the junction for around two minutes and counted six motorists using this “technique” to avoid red light while travelling from the Old Market (South) towards KTC bus stand. One biker, who was bypassing the signal missed being hit by a small pick-up. Shockingly, a Karnataka State bus used this technique and almost hit a car which was driving towards the signal from Madel.
All the other three approach roads of the Old Market junction have dividers. Only the western road leading to Madel-Colva does not have a divider. If a divider is installed the problem will be resolved.
These days work is going on to reduce the size of the circle. Maybe the authorities concerned will get a divider on the Madel-Old Market Circle in order to avoid these mischievous ‘technique’ used by the errant motorists.
