Citizen to petition HC with evidence of authorities’ mismanagement

MARGAO: Roque Mascarenhas, representing ‘Citizens for Margao’ and a petitioner, has decided to bring the dire state of the Sonsoddo dump yard to the attention of the High Court.

Frustrated with the ongoing mismanagement of day-to-day garbage, he plans to file an affidavit containing evidence of the authorities’ failure on Monday.

Mascarenhas expressed shock at the emergence of another dump within the vicinity of Sonsoddo, despite assurances from the Margao Municipal Council and other authorities to the High Court.

The deteriorating conditions at the dump yard, exacerbated during the monsoon, have resulted in the flowing of harmful leachate into residential areas and public gutters, posing serious health hazards.

The lack of space for dumping additional daily waste has compelled the civic body to establish another dump site outside the old treatment plant within the Sonsoddo premises. The dilapidated road makes it difficult for garbage trucks to navigate, while the crumbling walls of the old plant endanger workers involved in the baling process.

Mascarenhas condemned the pathetic state of affairs at the Sonsoddo dump yard, highlighting the authorities’ failure to fulfill their commitments to the High Court. He also emphasised the need to file an affidavit and present evidence to hold them accountable.
