Citizens call for action to protect and restore historical Tembim Wharf in Raia

During Operation Vijay, the wharf was utilised by Indian soldiers to reach and capture Margao

MARGAO: The citizens of Tembim-Raia are urging authorities to undertake the repair and restoration of the historically significant ‘Tembim Wharf’, which has fallen into a state of disrepair.

According to historical evidence, the Tembim Wharf played a prominent role during Goa’s pre-liberation period. It served as a temporary docking location for small ships from neighbouring States, allowing them to unload goods during high tide. The goods were then transported to the commercial town of Margao.

Flaviano Furtado, a resident of Tembim, has written a letter to the Camorlim Village Panchayat, drawing attention to the deteriorated condition of the Tembim Wharf. However, Basilio Fernandes, the Sarpanch of Camorlim, responded to the citizens’ letter, acknowledging that the Tembim Wharf falls within the jurisdiction of the Raia Panchayat. In response to the citizens’ request, the Camorlim Village Panchayat has written a letter to the Archaeological Survey Department, urging them to take appropriate action to restore the wharf to its former glory.

“The Tembim Wharf, located at the Tembim-Dongrim junction, is in urgent need of repairs and restoration,” stated Flaviano Furtado. He further highlighted that during Operation Vijay, the 4th Sikh Infantry utilised the Tembim Wharf after crossing the Zuari River to capture Margao, despite the destruction of the Borim Bridge. However, the historical significance of the wharf has been diminished over the years due to neglect and ignorance by local authorities.

Considering the historical and cultural importance of the area, citizens have requested urgent measures to protect, repair, and restore the Tembim Wharf.
