Citizens irked over ‘shortage’ of beds at South Goa District Hospital

MARGAO: Citizens have expressed frustration over an alleged shortage of beds in the women’s ward at South Goa District Hospital in Margao; however, hospital officials have clarified that there is no actual shortage.

Patients are sometimes kept on wheelchairs or trolleys for extended periods, including overnight, until beds become available.  A concerned citizen Siddesh Bhagat told reporters that the current situation at the district hospital is concerning, particularly with regards to the shortage of beds.

“The women’s ward is experiencing a critical shortage of beds. With only 52 beds available and over 64 patients being accommodated, the result is overcrowding and compromised care for vulnerable women,” he alleged.

He emphasised that this alarming situation underscores the urgent need for government intervention to ensure that every patient receives the necessary services and comfort.

“The health and well-being of our community depend on prompt action to address this issue. We call upon the government to prioritise the allocation of additional resources and beds to the women’s ward, ensuring that patients receive the quality care they need without undue strain on hospital facilities. We stand united in advocating for the health and dignity of all patients and urge immediate action to rectify this pressing concern,” he urged.

Reacting on the issue, Dr Rajendra Borkar, Medical Superintendent of Hospicio, said that there is no shortage but many times beds are full.

“And hence till the time somebody is discharged, we make available to the patients a trolley or a wheelchair and once the beds are empty, we allot them,” he clarified.

He explained that there is no shortage of beds, but the situation arises when the number of patients suddenly increases. He said, “It is true that for patients on trolleys or wheelchairs it may look like a shortage, during peak times with higher patient volumes, we must make these temporary arrangements.”
