Cleanliness drive held at Chandor, Guirdolim

The Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott in collaboration with the Panchayats of Cavorim-Chandor and Guirdolim along with Basic Christian Community of Our Lady of Bethlehem Church conducted a cleanliness drive in the village recently.
The GBE has been undertaking the village cleanliness drive since the last two years. Last year the panchayats of Cavorim-Chandor and Guirdolim joined them and in addition, this year the Church helped them to carry out this eco-friendly activity to keep the village clean and green.
Kaydence Media Ventures that owns goachronicle.com supported the exercise by sponsoring the black trash bags in which the plastic waste from the twin villages of Cavorim-Chandor and Guirdolim, that formed Chandrapur in olden time, was collected.
Savio Rodrigues, Editor in Chief of goachronicle.com said his company was committed to keeping Goa clean and green and promised to take up such activities in other villages too.
Members of the Basic Christian Community collected the plastic waste from households and surroundings and kept the bags at vantage points in each ward from where they were collected on Sunday by volunteers of Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott.
Anthony Dias, leader of the Parish Pastoral Council’s PATS and CATS advocated reducing the use of plastic if it cannot be stopped at all. He also advised not to burn plastic as plastic when burnt, releases carcinogenic gases.
Santan Antao the joint leader of PATS and CATS said that Basic Christian Community is responsible for keeping the environment clan and healthy and that was the reason why these grass root level organizations of the Church participated in the cleanliness drive
Some villagers also cleaned the roadsides, collecting the plastic waste littering there and also in the gutters.
Cavorim Chandor Sarpanch Derick Braganza Pereira and his Guirdolim counterpart Jose Antao appreciated the initiative of Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott and vowed to keep the villages clean.
Parish Priest Saude Pereira pointed out that the church also has a responsibility towards creating a healthy environment and said that he is also personally anguished with the growing litter in the village. While appreciating the efforts made by Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott, he also appealed to the parishioners to reduce the use of plastic and more importantly, dispose off the plastic as per the laid down procedures.
Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott President Rui da Silva while pointing out that plastic is emerging as the biggest menace as it is non-biodegradable said the GBE was committed to keeping the village clean.
