PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the underpass and an over bridge at the Old Goa-Karmali junction to allow free traffic flow on NH 4A (New NH-748).
The MDR leading to Karmali railway station and the old national highway meet at this junction. The project of two spans of 30 meters each, six lane VUP (11 meters on either side with a traffic median of two meters wide at the center) with slip roads and utility duct has been planned, as per GSIDC (Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation).
Traffic chaos at this junction after the four laning of the Ribandar bypass through Kadamba plateau, necessitated the project as a number of accidents occurred at the spot in the past.
GSIDC has awarded the work to M Venkata Rao, Infra Projects Pvt Ltd at the cost of Rs 47.85 crore and set a one year deadline to complete the construction.
Parrikar after laying the foundation stone said the government is firm on improving connectivity in the State and appealed to the people to observe traffic rules to reduce accidents.
Transport Minister Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar said the government will take up the widening of NH 4A from Anmod to Old Goa soon and assured that people would be compensated with the market value of the land.

Bainguinim garbage plant to be tendered soon: CM
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, addressing the locals at Old Goa, said that the 250 tonne garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim-Old Goa will be tendered shortly.
Speaking in the presence of panchayat members and local MLA Pandurang Madkaikar, the Chief Minister appealed to them not to panic as people tend to protest garbage plants in their villages. Parrikar asked the panch members to visit the Saligao garbage treatment plant to understand the concept. Madkaikar, who is a minister in the Parrikar government, had opposed the plant at Bainguinim, when he was with the Congress. He, however, has not protested this time and instead given a green signal to the Chief Minister.
