PANJIM: In a surprising comment, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar alleged that efforts are being made through various means to disturb communal peace in the State. But typically, there was no elaboration on this.
Speaking at the occasion of 54th ‘Goa Legislators Day’ function, Parsekar appealed to his fellow colleagues, former Ministers, MPs and MLAs, to guide the government and make suggestions on polices and on how to tackle forces or sections trying to disturb communal peace.
However, it appears that the concern for ‘communal harmony’ is a card played to tackle the government’s extreme unease at being attacked on various fronts for decisions which are clearly anti-people. The following statement gives its away: “Since its liberation, there has been communal harmony in the State of Goa. However, in the recent past there have been several attempts made to disturb communal harmony. Government functioning is targeted, trying to create some or the other controversy,” the Chief Minister said.
Appealing to the Legislators Forum, Parsekar said forum members, without any political interest, need to provide necessary guidance to government in the interest of the State. “Being experienced people, members need to come forward and intervene in those matters, which can lead to communal disharmony,” he said.
Meanwhile the Chief Minister also announced that the car loan facility enjoyed by current legislators would be extended to the forum members.
Legislators Day is held on January 9, the day when the State’s first Assembly session post liberation was held in 1964. Ministers Rajendra Arlekar, Dayanand Mandrekar, Deputy Speaker Anant Shet and other former legislators were present.
