MARGAO: Assuring full support to resolve the Sonsoddo legacy dump bioremediation issue, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has planned to visit the site in the next couple of days, after 16 BJP councillors of the Margao Municipal Council, including newly-elected Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar, met him in Panjim on Friday.
Accompanied by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, the councillors also met Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane and deliberated on the issues pertaining to the Municipality. “The CM has assured his support and also instructed the council members to take the Sonsoddo issue seriously,” Shirodkar told Herald, adding that Sawant would soon visit the site to take stock of the situation.

It is pertinent to note that the High Court had recently directed the concerned authorities to get rid of the legacy dump at Sonsoddo by February 2023, and pulled up the Margao Municipality and the Goa Waste Management Corporation for failing to do so.
Sources at the meeting also said that Sawant instructed the Chairperson to give equal treatment to all the councillors, and take them all into confidence before taking any decisions.
“During the time of finalising Shirodkar’s name for the post of Chairperson, many councillors from the BJP camp had filed complaints with the CM, pertaining to Shirodkar’s ‘working style’. Sawant has given clear instructions to the chairperson so that there is no division amongst the councillors,” said sources.
The ruling group in the Margao Municipality also has other challenging tasks ahead of them, like parking issues in the commercial capital, stray dog and cattle menace, and the administration of the civic body.
