MARGAO: Investigations by the Anti-Corruption Bureau into reports of discrepancies in the accounts of Cuncolim civic body have hit a dead end.
Months after the ACP raided the Cuncolim Municipal Council and seized vital documents, the probe has not made any headway till date. Letters written by the ACB to the accounts department to probe into the allegations of misappropriations, if any, is believed to have not found favour with the Accounts officials. Sources in the Accounts department informed that officials have told the investigating agency that the audit has already audited accounts of the civic body once and that it is not fair and proper to re-audit the accounts all over again.
In fact, officials said they have written to the ACB that if the investigating agency desires, they are free to move the government with a plea to appoint special auditors to conduct the inquiry into the CMC accounts. Efforts to contact ACB officials to throw light on the probe into CMC accounts proved futile, even as sources said the department higher ups have been kept abreast of the peculiar situation in the wake of the stand of the accounts department.
Sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau had descended on the Cuncolim civic body a couple of months ago to seize account documents in the wake of reports that an amount of Rs 40 lakh stashed in fixed deposit was not shown on the cash book. The ACB had stepped in the picture after serious doubts were raised over the intention of not showing the fixed deposit amount in the cash book.
