CUNCOLIM: Finally Cuncolim Municipal Council agreed to withdraw the controversial decision to set up the Garbage Collection Centre at Cuncolim bus stand. The Council has now decided to set up two collection centres, one at Industrial estate and other at Maddicotto, Cuncolim.
It may be recalled that CMC had decided to set up the garbage collection centre near KTC bus stand close to NH17.
The Council had also decided to collect garbage from neigbouring villages of Velim, Assolna, Sarzora, Ambelim and Balli.
This decision of CMC has irked the villagers as Cuncolkars had objected to this decision and had threatened to protest if the Council would go ahead with their decision.
Sources from CMC revealed that the chairperson and other ruling members had expressed the sentiments of locals regarding garbage collection centre. The chairperson and other councillors reportedly told the Chief Officer not to go ahead with the proposal to set up garbage collection centre. According to sources the CMC Chief and the ruling councillors had suggested alternative sites, one being at Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
According to CMC sources they will appoint one person at the collection centre. It is not clear whether they will collect only dry waste or wet waste also.
The Council has also not cleared whether they will go ahead with the idea of collecting garbage from the neighbouring villages.
It’s strange that on one side the Council wanted to clean Cuncolim by converting the village into a bin-free city while on the other it wanted to have a separate garbage collection centre which destroys the essence of the system followed at present.
The Council has a door-to-door garbage collection system.
Meanwhile the dry garbage centre at Panzorconi, which was set up by highway authorities along with Science and Technology Department has been turned into the garbage dump site. Highway authorities have allotted a contract to collect dry waste from the Highway side.
However, the contractor is keeping this garbage at Panzorconi in an iron cage. Contractor is not lifting this garbage on regular basis.
Taking advantage many outsiders dump their wet garbage at this place. CMC has demanded that the highway authorities clear the garbage on a regular basis.
