CUNCOLIM: Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas withdrew all the rights given to her deputy Mario Moraes at the CMC’s bi-monthly meeting on Friday.
The CMC, in its first meeting after the formation of the new council in October, had appointed Moraes as its spokesperson, and he was also given the right to speak on the Chairperson’s behalf. However, councillors alleged that, for the next seven months after the elections, Moraes acted as a proxy chairperson and he conducted meetings himself and used the Council’s seal and letterheads while writing letters to various departments.
After the meeting on Friday, Mascarenhas told newspersons that the CMC, by a resolution, had withdrawn all rights given to Moraes, and that he would not interfere in the Council’s affairs.
Some councillors also alleged that Moraes had misused his powers, and the chairperson had no other option but to withdraw his powers.
It may be recalled that the CMC chief officer had also filed two police complaints against Moraes for alleged assault, while Moraes had filed a vigilance complaint against the CO.
Meanwhile, the CMC has decided to hire eight temporary labourers for its pre-monsoon works. Herald had reported about the snail’s pace of the works, and taking the cognizance of the same, the CMC decided to expedite the work and finish it early.
