PANJIM: The North Goa Collector has asked for an action taken report from various departments linked to the manufacture and sale of bread (pao) as to know what efforts are being made to keep watch that conditions applicable to bakers are maintained.
North Collector held a joint meeting of concerned departments including health, food and drugs administration, legal metrology, civil supplies and NGO ‘GOACAN’ to ensure that the quality and hygiene is not compromised.
The Collector has asked for the ATR by December 21. Speaking to Herald, North Goa Collector Agnelo Fernandes said the director of the main department, which is panchayats, was absent from the meeting.
He said that it is village panchayats and the municipalities that issue licenses to bakeries, and data has to come from the department. He said there are many bakeries which are not registered, some of them are even operated by foreigners, and some do not maintain hygienic conditions.
An NGO led by Roland Martins appealed to the North Goa Collector in 2015 that bakeries need to be streamlined and as per law their trade should be monitored.
Fernandes said that all the bakeries should be registered and so too bicycles used in selling bread.
