PANJIM: In a bid to check the growing irregularities in the functioning of comunidades, and so also illegal encroachment of the land, the State government intends to bring in some major amendments in the comunidade code during the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly.
Addressing media persons on Wednesday, Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte admitted that there are lots of issues regarding comunidades, beginning with its functioning and going on to illegal encroachment of land. “Illegalities mushrooming in comunidade areas need to be dealt with seriously,” he said.
“To put in place the entire comunidade system, we will be amending the comunidade laws. The amendments would be introduced in the forthcoming session of the State Assembly,” Khaunte said.
The Minister urged comunidade bodies to cooperate with the government to weed out illegalities.
Recently, as a step towards revival of the defunct comunidades, the government had appointed committees on 57 bodies in North and South Goa.
Khaunte had earlier said the government is considering recommendations of the five-member Comunidade Commission, formed following directions from the High Court of Bombay at Goa.
The Commission had proposed eliminating gender discrimination and bringing fallow land under cultivation to prevent encroachments. It had also suggested that shareholders be given the right to purchase comunidade land.
