Comunidades Vow Legal Battle Against Law Regularising Illegal Homes

At a Sunday gathering in the Xavier Centre for Historical Research, the Fellowship of Gauncares of Comunidades resolved to oppose the State’s newly introduced law that aims to legitimise illegal housing on comunidade lands.

Lawyers present at the meeting briefed attendees on the implications of the law and highlighted the importance of updated land records. They urged comunidades to prepare detailed surveys of their holdings, documenting encroachments through official maps from the Land Survey Department.

The legal experts also provided guidance on pursuing legal action against the government. Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas strongly objected to the legislation, describing it as a misuse of legislative power. He maintained that only after acquiring land and compensating comunidades fairly should the State be permitted to transfer ownership through legal deeds.
