Pernem: Locals have raised concerns about the ongoing hill cutting, which is being done to supply mud to fill up the land for the construction of the six-lane highway in Pernem.
Locals have pointed out that two hills have already been cut from one side at Virnoda and that another Hill at Nagzar is also being cut. They are worried about the possibility of floods in view of the approaching monsoon period.
“One fourth of the hill has been sliced. There were trees on these hills which used to control the flow of rain water. However with the ongoing hill cutting many trees are chopped. With the absence of these trees, and since this land will be left abandoned, there will be direct water flow in surrounding areas,” said Divesh Salgaonkar
Another local Diptesh Naik said,” Now that the rain water will flow directly onto the ground, this flowing water will directly come on the road. There are chances that during rain daily commuters will face hardships due to the flooding.”
“ I don’t understand by hills which are in residential areas are being chopped off. Why government is intending to harm the nature? With this constant hill cutting and further deforestation in different places, nature will be affected very badly and the environment will suffer too during the various weather cycles”, added Neha Naik said.
