PANJIM: As the Southwest monsoon reached Kerala on Saturday, the heavy pre-monsoon rainfall accompanied by wind and thundershower lashed the capital and its surrounding today morning throwing normal life out of gear.
The Indian Meteorological Observatory recorded 2.2 mm of rainfall in Panjim in the last 24 hours.
The heavy downpour, which started at around 7.30 am was later reduced to a drizzle after long spells of heavy downpours. The city witnessed heavy traffic jams and water logging at several places. The winds kept fire department officials on their toes with the headquarters at St Inez receiving nine calls in the morning hours only.
The very first call of the day was from the KTC bus stand where a branch of a tree fell on the road damaging three vehicles. However, no casualty was reported as the branch fell on parked two-wheelers. The total loss reported was around Rs 1.20 lakh.
Emergency calls, mostly pertaining to uprooted trees, were received from areas of Bhatlem, Caranzalem, Campal, Taleigao, St Cruz and Bambolim.
As per IMD records, the maximum and minimum temperatures for the day remained between 30 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively. The Met department has predicted more rain and thundershowers over the next few hours.
Earlier, IMD had predicted the Southwest monsoon would reach Goa by June 7 and the rainfall would be normal.
