MARGAO: Accusing the government of failing to take any action against the beggars and homeless in the town, Margao Block Congress on Thursday alleged that BJP’s close aides are running the beggar mafia.
Block president Gopal Naik said, “It is unfortunate that even after three deaths of persons sleeping on roadsides have occurred due to COVID and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat repeatedly urging the government to roundup the homeless and beggars by accommodating them in shelter homes, the government has not acted for the last fifteen days.”
“I have a strong feeling that some of the close aides of the party with a difference are involved in running the beggar mafia. In the last few months, there has been a spike in beggars all over the State, who create nuisance at every public place especially at the traffic signals. The authorities have remained blind spectators despite repeated media reports and public outcry,” he claimed.
It may be recalled that immediately after the first COVID death of a beggar was reported in Margao, Leader of Opposition had met the Collector and had urged him to immediately round up all beggars and homeless and accommodate them in shelter homes.
The MLA had demanded that the Government should make arrangements to send them back to their native States.
He had also demanded removal of all illegal shelters erected on the SGPDA ground. Unfortunately, nothing has happened till date.
