PANJIM: Claiming that Congress cannot be blamed for the special economic zone (SEZ) policy, the party leadership alleged that efforts are on to bring out old skeletons to hamper the party’s political prospects ahead of the Assembly elections.
“If anybody thinks that by bringing out skeletons, someone will get frightened, they are wrong. It is a decade-old issue and has no validity now,” GPCC president Luizinho Faleiro said, referring to the summons recently issued to him and Leader of the Opposition Pratapsingh Rane by Anti Corruption Branch investigating the SEZ land scam.
“SEZ was a policy of the Government of India in 2000 and the State government in 2005, through a cabinet decision, decided to introduce the same in Goa. But Goa was not the only State to do so. From 2000 to 2005 several states adopted the policy,” he explained.
Faleiro said that it has been almost 15 years since the policy came up and a decade since the Goa cabinet took the decision. “There is no point in raising the issue now,” he said.
Congress has demanded that an IT and Biotechnology policy be introduced in the State to generate more employment.
