Congress leaders make a beeline for Delhi

PANJIM: As the Congress party in Goa tries to settle down after the appointment of former chief minister and AICC general secretary Luizinho Faleiro as president of the state unit, replacing outspoken former president John Fernandes, local leaders have made a beeline to the national capital to meet the party high command.

Durgadas Kamat, the spokesman under the previous president is in Delhi where he met the AICC general secretary and state in-charge Digvijay Singh and secretary Chella Kumar. On Wednesday, Congress sources informed, leader of opposition Pratapsing Rane and newly appointed president Luizinho Faleiro met Singh.
The incumbent president had made it his mission to try and assert the primacy of the party over the leaders many of whom were seen to have become bigger than the party itself. Luizinho on the other hand, as could be seem on the day of his installation has chosen to bring all the partymen together including those who had openly worked against the party candidates in the Lok Sabha elections.
Fernandes had put his trust in a young though ambitious team lead by Durgadas Kamat and former youth Congress president Pratima Coutinho, while Luizinho a shrewd politician has shown his talent and ability to manage the different power groups that make up a Congress party unit in any state by handling elections in Karnataka and the North east states before that.
However, given that exit polls are predicting a Congress rout – where it could be number 3 – in both Maharashtra and Haryana, from a position of power, the Cong will have to rethink its position vis-a-vis its much vaunted status quo policy. Analysis suggest that the party was routed due to lack of party organization in the states such as Goa especially during the LS elections when the party had to virtually outsource its election campaign, as its own leaders refused to work for the candidates, leading it to an unthinkable defeat.
