Congress slams govt for banking on herd immunity against COVID-19

Panjim: Pointing out that banking on people developing herd immunity to fight coronavirus is too risky and can be disastrous,

Congress on Tuesday reiterated its demands for the immediate sealing of borders by the government and banning of entry of people from red zones, to Goa.

Addressing media persons, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) General Secretary Agnelo Fernandes slammed the government tactics at a time when a large portion of the State’s population is vulnerable to coronavirus.

Pointing to a report by World Health Organization, Fernandes said that herd immunity, typically works when 60-70%  population of a country has been affected and it’s too large a risk to take for any nation or State.

“Going for herd immunity without any vaccination in place is going to be dangerous and will put more lives under threat,” he said.

He added that with herd immunity more people will get infected to the deadly virus, which will further shatter the State and country’s economy.
