Contractor, Engineer Booked After Mapusa Gallery Collapse Injures Six

Mapusa Police have registered a criminal case against a Pune-based contractor and a site engineer following the collapse of an under-construction gallery projection in Dangui Colony, Mapusa, which left six labourers injured. Police have alleged that the accident occurred due to gross negligence and inadequate safety measures at the construction site.
The incident took place on July 19 when the gallery projection of the under-construction structure suddenly gave way, trapping and injuring workers engaged in construction activities. The injured were immediately rushed to Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim, for treatment.
Based on a complaint lodged by Head Constable Vijay Gaidekar, police have booked contractor Avub, a resident of Pune, and site engineer Gunjesh. The case has been registered under relevant provisions dealing with negligence and endangering human life, and further investigations are underway.
According to police, five of the injured workers—Durgesh Paras (18), Mohammad Hossain Ali (26), Habeb Rehman (34), Nasim Ali (30) and Binod Kumar Prasad (40)—were treated at GMC and later discharged. Another worker, Mohammad Rakiul Khan (35), continues to undergo treatment at the hospital.
Investigators are examining whether the construction work complied with mandatory safety protocols and whether adequate precautions had been taken to protect labourers working at the site. Officials said technical aspects of the collapse are also being reviewed as part of the probe.
PSI Bablo Parab is leading the investigation and is expected to record statements from the contractor, site engineer, workers and other witnesses connected with the project. Police are also likely to examine construction documents and site records to determine if there were lapses in supervision or violations of building safety norms.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities said further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry into the circumstances that led to the structural collapse.
