Goan Labourers Demand Justice, Reinstatement Amid Accusations of Bias and Unsafe Work Conditions
Cotarlim, Sanguem: Tensions flared early this morning at the Timblo Agricultural Farm in Cotarli, Sanguem, as a large group of local villagers and long-time farm workers staged a protest against alleged harassment, discrimination, and exploitative labour practices.
The protest saw dozens of daily wage workers, many with over three decades of experience at the farm, gherao the farm office, demanding justice, fair treatment, and a direct meeting with the farm’s owner, Radha Timblo.
According to the workers, the protest was triggered by continued harassment from the farm manager, who they allege has been targeting Goan labourers for minor or unjustified reasons, leading to their removal from employment. The workers claim that those displaced are being replaced by migrant labourers from Jharkhand, despite the locals’ longstanding ties to the land and their community.
“People from Jharkhand are given excellent treatment by neglecting locals,” said Nilesh Shirdikar, a local resident.
Though the company reportedly offers equal pay and basic facilities to migrant workers, local labourers argue the displacement of Goan workers is unjust, especially given their deep-rooted connection to the farm and years of service.
Adding to the outrage are serious allegations of labour law violations. Protesters claim that some migrant workers are being allowed to work in the fields with newborn babies and young children, a practice that raises major concerns over child safety and legal compliance.
Despite repeated appeals over the years, workers say no effort has been made by the management to address their grievances or arrange a dialogue with Radha Timblo.
The protesters are demanding:
An immediate meeting with the farm owner
An end to the harassment of local Goan workers
Reinstatement of workers dismissed without valid cause
“Local workers should not be harassed and should be reemployed at the farm,” emphasized Vithal Gaonkar, the local panch.
As of now, no response has been issued by the farm management, leaving the situation tense and unresolved. The villagers have vowed to continue their protest until their voices are heard and action is taken.
